Storage Tips

  • Make a list of everything you intend to store.
               Note which items can be taken apart for easier transport
               and reduced storage costs keep it safe for future reference.
  • Plan how you will use your space in the most efficient manner.
               A 100 sq foot unit will be at least 10 ft x 10 ft by 7 ft high.
  • Start packing any non-essential items such as extra clothes, paintings and ornaments early.
    Estimate the replacement value of all your items to arrange insurance cover.
    If possible select an area in your house possibly the garage and mark out an area equivalent to the space you wish to rent. This will give you a clearer idea of how to fill your space when the day arrives.
    For easy location of your items, number or label your boxes clearly.

  • Clearly label each boxes contents on the outside
  • Box as many of your items as possible and avoid over filling so that there is a good platform to stack upwards.
  • Use the space in chests of drawers and wardrobes to store boxes and clothes. This helps reducing storage costs and maximizing space.
  • Protect furniture such as Sofas, Chairs, Mattresses with purpose made bags and wrap table and chair legs using bubble wrap to avoid damage.
  • Purchase a good quality padlock, available in store.
  • Place heavy or bulky items in your unit first to provide a good base.
  • Use good quality cardboard storage boxes, we can supply heavy duty storage boxes and accessories that will not collapse when stacked in your storage unit.

  • Thoroughly defrost freezers prior to storage as the water from melted ice can ruin your stored possessions.

  • Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open to aid ventilation.

  • Ensure that dishwashers and washing machines are drained of all water as water can seep out into your unit if the appliances are not fully drained.

  • Pictures or mirrors should be wrapped with bubble wrap, placed in a strong boxes marked fragile and stacked on their end.

  • Remove batteries from electrical items.
  • Garden equipment should be cleaned and drained of fuel before storing.
